KBR Vehicles were recently testing the AL500B device. This is a neat little fault reader, but doubles up as an extensive battery tester. KBR Vehicles found this device to be a fantastic bit of kit, aimed at the DIY mechanic. It’s ideal for those who have an EML (engine management warning light) illuminated on their vehicle and they want to see what the cause of the warning light is. It has the ability to conduct Readiness status of the emissions control systems, giving the more experienced DIY mechanic more of an understanding as to potential concerns with their vehicle. Whilst it does not extend to full vehicle system reading/fault clearing, it is ideal for engine scanning and certainly suited to the DIY mechanic in that respect.
The battery tester on this device however, is fantastic. This device is able to conduct battery testing on both 12v and 24v batteries. The user is able to not only conduct a standard battery test, but they are able to check the cranking and charging systems too. This is a lot of capability packed into a small, neat device. Super handy, convenient and cost effective. The battery testing ability of this device has enabled us at KBR Vehicles to conduct battery tests on customer vehicles, ensuring that their battery will stand the winter months. It also ensures that we are able to test the battery on our customers vehicles that are garaged during the winter months, but brought out for summer, ensuring that they can enjoy the use of their vehicle while we have a few days of sunshine.
The device tests the battery, and gives a result of either Good (illuminated by a green LED), Good but charge (illuminated by a yellow LED) or Bad (illuminated by a red LED).
As a total package, the AL500B is a really cool bit of kit, with the OBD lead adopting an LED light in order to locate the OBD socket. If KBR Vehicles were to criticise this device at all, it would merely be to include an in-built printer for battery testing results. That said, the device comes with the illuminated OBD lead, battery testing lead, USB connection cable for connecting the device to a laptop/PC in order to update or print test results, user manual and a neat carry case.
